Join the Drum Point Flotilla!!America’s Volunteer Lifesavers are the nearly 36,000 civilian men and women who proudly volunteer their time and skills everyday in service to their country in the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary. The USCG Auxiliary was authorized by an Act of Congress in 1939 as the only volunteer civilian component of the U. S. Coast Guard. Auxiliarists assist the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, search and rescue, marine environmental protection and Coast Guard Academy introduction programs, just to name a few. Auxiliarists volunteer more than two million hours annually to benefit other boaters and their families. Whether you are a first time boater or an “old salt,” the Coast Guard Auxiliary can provide you with good comradeship and the skills to help improve public safety on the water while working directly with the Coast Guard. Not in the Calvert
County area, but still interested? Read on . . . At no time in recent history have the demands on the Coast Guard been so great as in the aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on American soil. The need for new volunteers to join the Coast Guard Auxiliary is stronger today than ever before. The opportunities and responsibilities associated with serving your country as an active civilian volunteer member of the Coast Guard's forces have never been greater. Congress established the USCG Auxiliary in 1939 to assist the Coast Guard in promoting boating safety. In 1996, Congress authorized the Auxiliary to perform virtually all missions performed by the active duty and reserve members of the U.S. Coast Guard, with the exception of direct law enforcement and military action. But recently, its role has taken on many vital new challenges and responsibilities. They have become extensions of the eyes and ears of the active duty Coast Guard. On March 1, 2003, the Auxiliary became the preeminent volunteer agency in the new Department of Homeland Security. Today there is an exciting new level of purpose and an added sense of pride that comes from being a valued member of the U. S. Coast Guard Auxiliary – America’s Volunteer Lifesaver’s. Volunteer members come from all walks of life, and receive essentially the same training as their active duty and reserve counterparts so that they can be a functional part of the Coast Guard’s forces. Members of the Auxiliary also assist the Coast Guard in non-law enforcement programs such as public education, vessel safety checks, safety patrols, search and rescue, marine environmental protection, Coast Guard Academy Introduction Mission (AIM), and numerous Auxiliary Aviation programs, to name just a few. Whether you are a first time boater or an "old salt", the Coast Guard Auxiliary can provide you with good comradeship and the skills to help keep America Safe, while improving public safety on the water. And in many instances, you may be working directly with the U.S. Coast Guard, an opportunity that most other services do not offer.
